Kolortek Chameleon Pigments are color-shifting pearlescent pigments based on layered mineral substrates coated with metal oxides. The pigments produce a visible color travel effect when viewed from different angles. This optical interference creates multi-tone transitions commonly used in automotive coatings, plastics, printing inks, and decorative finishes.

Chameleon pigments operate on the principle of thin-film interference. By precisely controlling the thickness of metal oxide layers (such as Titanium Dioxide or Iron Oxide) and silica on a transparent substrate, specific wavelengths of light are reflected while others are transmitted.
Optical Mechanism: As the viewing angle changes, the light path through the layers varies, causing the perceived color to shift along a predefined spectrum (e.g., Blue-Green to Blue to Violet to Red).
Substrate Stability: These pigments feature excellent chemical and UV stability. Unlike organic dyes, the color is structural, meaning it will not fade or "bleed" over time.
Performance: They are non-conductive and heat-resistant, making them compatible with high-temperature plastic extrusion and complex automotive coating systems.
Strong Color Flow: Delivers an unmistakable multi-tone transition that increases product shelf appeal and perceived value.
Exceptional Transparency: The use of high-transparency flake crystals ensures clean, vibrant color transitions without the cloudiness associated with lower-grade pigments.
Versatile Compatibility: Effective in water-borne, solvent-borne, and powder coating systems, as well as UV-cured inks and various plastic resins.
Security Applications: The complexity of the color travel makes these pigments ideal for anti-counterfeiting measures in high-security printing and negotiable securities.

Creating dynamic, multi-color effects usually requires complex multi-stage painting processes or the use of expensive, unstable dyes that fail under UV exposure. Furthermore, in security printing, standard pigments are easily replicated, offering little protection against sophisticated counterfeiting.
Kolortek’s Solution: Our Chameleon Series provides a "one-pigment" solution for complex color travel. Because the color is a result of structural interference within the silica/metal-oxide layers, it is inherently stable and resistant to environmental degradation. In security applications, the specific "color flip" of our Blue-green/Blue/Violet/Red travel provides a distinct, hard-to-replicate optical signature that is easily verified by the naked eye.
With 20 years of manufacturing experience, Kolortek maintains strict control over the layer thickness and particle size distribution. This ensures that the color travel remains consistent across different production batches—critical for automotive OEM and high-security printing where color deviation is not permitted.
